Differentiation in International Schools Assessment

MYP Teachers Meredith Phinney, Sally Neaves and Kerry Kennedy have just completed the workshop on Differentiation by Bill and Ochan Powell last weekend, 2-3 October 2010.

Questions and comments arising from the workshop:

1. What does authentic assessment in an international school look like?
2. What are the implications for AIS arising from this workshop?

3. Do you think the MYP is beginning to address the needs of our students in assessment for learning at AIS?

4. How do you intend to implent some of the assessment strategies advised by Bill and Ochan?

Humanities Workshop with Nicole Schmidt

The Humanities consultation visit with Nicole Schmidt had the desired effect: pulling the team together, creating a unique AIS vision and giving us the tools to start implementing MYP Humanities strategies.

Nicole shared many strategies for Assessment and Unit Planning used at her school, NIST. She gave us a more confident direction by encouraging us as beginners on the MYP journey and had us leaving ready to get going, uplifted, ready to respond to the rigours of the MYP as professional, competent educators.

Questions for the Humanities team:

1. What aspects of the Humanities workshop did you find most beneficial? Why?

2. How do you think the workshop will feed your professional practice from now on?

3. What particular areas of the workshop did you find difficult, confusing, need further discussion/clarification?

4. Can you suggest topics for future workshops/PD which you think would build MYP confidence in all teachers at AIS?

Unit Question Samples

1. What can our school do to save endangered species?

2. What is sound and why is it important?

3. How are mountains made?

4. Am I really growing like a weed? What do plants need to grow? How do plants grow? How would you grow and big, strong beanstalk to reach the giant’s house?

5. Why do we need manners?

6. How does weather affect me? Can I go outside to play today? How is weather different in other places?

7. How can we change attitudes and behaviour within whole communities?

8. How are relationships built and maintained?

Task: Write a brief comment on 2 Unit Questions discussed today.

For each question state the ideal AOI SLE and the Significant Concept. Comment based on the following criteria:


Is the unit question open ended?
Doest the Unit Question allow for discussion?
Does it provide a context for inquiry that leads back to the AOI?
Is it judgmental/leading?
Is it interesting/engaging?
Does it lead to more questions or further inquiry?
Does it promote higher order thinking?
Is it succinct?
Can it be used to make connections with diverse content?
Is it timeless?
Does it connect to the world?
Is it too narrow or vague?
Does it focus on the essence of the unit?
