What is the Nature of the IBO Learner Profile?

The IB learner profile is the IBO mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century. It is a set of ideals that can inspire, motivate and focus the work of schools and teachers, uniting them in a common purpose.

What are the aims of the profile?

The attributes and descriptors of the learner profile define the type of learner the IBO hopes to develop through its programmes. IB programmes promote the education of the whole person, emphasizing intellectual, personal, emotional and social growth through all domains of knowledge.

  1. I think this description goes beyond adolescence into adulthood. It could be used as a guide for most of us no matter what our age or experience.

  2. The description covers all angles….for life skills in its practicality. However, I will need to further investigate as to what the application of the philosophy will do to assist the under-achievers,besides Moderation of the curriculum, in the practice of this Learner Profile and its principles.

  3. Have a look at ‘Structure of Intellect’ for a deep insight into learner profiles. We did this with Ken Imeson in Australia and whilst difficuilt to do (100 tests) it certainly shows up what you are dealing with.

  4. The learner profile is a beginning guide to remind us to consider the depth of ourselcves and of our students as learners. I had a colleague once who used to get really annoyed whe teachers asked students to “think” without giving structured ways and angles to thinks. What I like about the learner profile is it geives teachers a structure to “think” about the delivery of lessons and hopefully encourages teachers to create richer lessons.
